Journey to Ampara

My father who is lawyer in profession and another senior lawyer had an assignment in Ampara courts last week. Since I am on my vacation I also joined with them. I have never been to Ampara before. traveling

To go to Ampara you have to go along Kandy - Mahiyangana road. After Mahiyangana, Security personals are a common site along the road. In Mahaoya there is a somewhat big security check point with several security personals. In here travellers to Ampara should tell security personals what is the purpose of your journey. In Mahaoya, road divides into two, one goes to Batticolo and other one to Ampara. Paddy fields are a common site Mahaoya to Ampara. It is said is largest paddy harvesting area in Sri Lanka. When we reach Ampara town time was at about seven in the evening. Ampara is a somewhat big town. There are several temples, big play ground which belongs to the municipal council of Ampara in the town.

We stayed at Monty's guest house. I think it's the best place to stay if you go to Ampara. There are about 50 rooms available at that guest house at the moment. Management is trying to expand the guest house as construction work is going on at the moment. Room we stayed, had good facilities. There was a TV and room had air conditioning as well. There were many foreigners at the guest house that day belonging to various organizations such Red Cross, UN who are doing humanitarian work in Eastern part of the Sri Lanka.

If you go to Ampara don't forget that you have to register your vehicle with all the details in the Ampara police. On the way home you have to give that to Mahaoya check point otherwise you can't exit from Ampara. With the situation of the country at the moment I don't recommend going there unless you have an official work.

I think it's not a good idea to go for recreational stuff to Ampara. Security people ask various questions such as why u go there etc. After abt 7 everyone no one goes out side due to security concerns. But machan since war is over maybe in few months time. :)

Once I have counted 3 wild Elephants swimming at Inginiyagala Tank. In the next season it was the drought and there were so many fishermans came from Gandara & Devundara area and dried fish making Karawala. Seasonal changes are the best memories I have about Ampara. Like to go again with Nadun in our next trip to Sri Lanka.
